Lokorio Mary
Mary’s History
Mary and her sisters started going to the streets when she was just seven years old. While they still lived at their home with their mother, she could not provide for them and they would search through the garbage to find food. After two years of this, C.R.O. found them and invited them to come back to the organization. She was able to join school the following year, with the help of C.R.O. Even when her mother fell sick the following year and moved the family to a neighboring district, C.R.O. still sponsored her until she finished secondary school.
Mary’s CROSO Scholarship
Mary was selected in 2009 to be CROSO’s very first female scholar and proceeded to study Development Studies at Uganda Christian University in Mbale. While at school, she stayed in the student hostels at UCU, which she said removed all her worries and allowed her to focus on her studies well.
Mary graduated from Uganda Christian University in 2012 with a degree in Development Studies.
After the CROSO Scholarship
Mary currently works as a Public Health Educator for an international NGO called Samaritan’s Purse. She helps provide health training sessions in the Moroto and Napak Districts. Mary focuses mostly on hygiene education, teaching children the proper ways to wash their hands and teaching adults how to help avoid the spread of diarrheal diseases.
