Simon began his studies in 2021 and he is currently working towards a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at the International University of East Africa in Kampala. The COVID-19 pandemic made it a difficult time to be starting a new area of study, but Simon’s determination and hard work served him well. He said that returning to campus after a period of online schooling “was one of the best moments in life.” Simon is expected to graduate from his program in 2025.

Simon has been enjoying his studies, especially when he is able to gain hands-on experience in the field. As early as his first semester, he shared that in his favorite class (Engineering Profession and Society class) his professor  “engaged the class with thought challenging discussions that constitute most of outside of class activities, such as visiting nearby construction sites”.  This experience helped Simon gain a better understanding of what his future career may look like which he really enjoyed.

Simon is very compassionate to those around him and he is always looking for ways to give back to his community. Over his winter break, he donated blood at his local Red Cross and encouraged others to do the same. Simon’s determination and innovation has proven him to be a great leader in and out of the classroom

Simon’s Vision for the Future:

Simon chose to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering because he wants to help his community through his profession, “Given the gap created by few engineers in the country, this has pursued me to apply for this course so that I can provide to vulnerable people with durable, cheap and decent houses hence improving lives of countless people.”

More Background Information on Simon:

During his time in secondary school, Simon was heavily involved in his community and led by example. He was a gender and welfare advocate at school, a peer educator, chief coordinator for both the scripture and entrepreneurs’ clubs, as well as being a strong advocate for children’s rights in the larger community. His hardworking and compassionate nature was greatly influenced by his mother who battled breast cancer throughout his time at school. Simon dedicated much of his time to caring for his mother as well as picking up jobs, like selling utensils, to support them both.
